EMDR Side Effects: What to Expect After Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is designed to help your brain process distressing memories in a healthier way. During therapy, you revisit difficult experiences while using guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds.

Because this process activates memories and emotions, it’s common to notice changes after your session ends. These experiences are often temporary and can be a sign that your brain is continuing the work between appointments.  Knowing what to expect can make the experience feel less surprising and help you care for yourself during the healing process.

Common Emotional Side Effects

One of the most common experiences after EMDR is feeling emotionally drained. Processing painful memories takes energy, so it’s normal to feel tired, emotionally sensitive, or more vulnerable than usual afterward.

You may notice stronger emotions than expected, mood changes throughout the day, feeling tearful without an obvious reason, or experiencing temporary irritability and frustration. You may also become more aware of your emotions and how they affect you. These feelings can be part of your brain continuing to process and organize experiences that may have been stored for a long time.

Giving yourself time to rest and allowing these emotions to come and go without judgment can help you move through the processing period with greater self-compassion.

Physical Symptoms

Many people notice physical sensations after EMDR sessions, especially during the early stages of treatment. Your body may respond to the emotional work in ways that can leave you feeling different physically, even after the session has ended.

Some temporary physical side effects can include fatigue or low energy, headaches, muscle tension, changes in sleep patterns, vivid dreams, and nausea or stomach discomfort. These symptoms are temporary and often improve within a day or two.

Staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and giving yourself permission to slow down can help your body recover and give you the space you need to process what came up during your session.

Why These Reactions Happen

EMDR helps your brain reprocess memories that may have been stuck in an unprocessed state. As those memories become integrated with healthier thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, your nervous system continues working even after you leave your therapist’s office.

You might remember details you hadn’t thought about in years or make new connections between past experiences and present behaviors. Some people find themselves thinking about their session more than expected in the following days. This continued processing is a normal part of how EMDR works.

Caring for Yourself After an EMDR Session

If you can, try not to pack your schedule immediately after an EMDR appointment. Your mind and body may need a little extra downtime to settle and process what came up during the session.

Helpful self-care strategies include drinking plenty of water, prioritizing a good night’s sleep, taking a walk or spending time outdoors, journaling about thoughts or emotions that come up, practicing grounding exercises, and limiting unnecessary stress when possible.

You don’t have to push yourself to get back to your normal routine right away. Giving yourself space to slow down can help you feel more grounded as you continue processing.

If intense emotions continue for several days or start to feel overwhelming, reach out to your therapist. They can help you understand what you’re experiencing, talk through any concerns, and offer strategies to support you until your next session.

Next Steps

EMDR isn’t always an easy process, but it can be an incredibly effective one. Temporary emotional or physical side effects don’t mean you’re moving backward. They’re part of your brain’s natural healing process as it learns to store difficult memories in a healthier way.
