AGES SERVED: Children, Adolescents, and Adults
About me:
I bring over 15 years of experience as a special education teacher to my work as a therapist, where I support children, adolescents, and adults in navigating their challenges and embracing their differences as strengths. Born and raised in Germany, Belgium, New Zealand, and Japan, I moved to the United States at age 10.
I am part of the LGBTQ+ community and have lived experience -as well as long-term healing and recovery- in almost all of the treatment areas I work with (listed below). These have all taught me to appreciate diverse perspectives and cultures, and give me a deep empathy and belief in each person’s capacity to overcome and grow.
HOW I WORK WITH CLIENTS: I work to help clients make sense of their own stories, using Narrative Therapy. Together, we look at the values that truly matter to you, using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to reframe maladaptive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors not as failings, but as understandable coping strategies and responses to the pressures of larger family, social, cultural, and economic systems. We learn to accept these patterns without shame and -with the help of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)- develop more helpful ways of relating to ourselves, others, and the world. By reframing these parts of ourselves as “helpful or unhelpful” rather than “good or bad,” we create space for GENTLENESS, judgment-free exploration, and growth. I am also passionate about Strengths-Based Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy, where we work to remember your strengths and build on solutions you may already have.
Finally, recent theories and the neurodiversity movement reframe traditional views of some “disorders” or “disabilities” as potentially unique cognitive styles that may offer valuable perspectives, talents, and adaptive traits. Therapy, in my view, is about creating a compassionate space to uncover and explore who you are, recognize your strengths, and find ways to live authentically. I’m honored to walk alongside my clients on this journey toward understanding, growth, and fulfillment.
